FIDUCIA researcher Elena Vaccari is awarded European Doctorate

On May 23, 2014, FIDUCIA researcher Elena Vaccari, from the University of Parma, successfully defended her doctoral dissertation before a panel of distinguished scholars: J.A. Vervaele (Utrecht University), Michele Papa (University of Firenze) and Gabriele Fornasari (University of Trento).

The thesis, entitled “Overcriminalization and Prison Overcrowding: In Search for Effective Solutions”, analyzes the problem of “overcriminalization” and “prison overcrowding” in Europe. In particular, it analyzes the case of Italy, in light of the recent finding of a violation of Art. 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights due to prison overcrowding (the 2013 Torreggiani case). The thesis argues that new inclusive policies (e.g. in the areas of cannabis) could help minimize the role of criminal law and consequently have an impact on prison population.

Portions of Ms. Vaccari’s doctoral thesis were conceptualized under Work Package 10 of the FIDUCIA Project. In fact, the problem of “overcriminalization” is central to the FIDUCIA concept. For a discussion of the findings of this thesis, do not hesitate to contact Elena Vaccari:
